Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.
Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Players will gain the ability to contest certain rulings from the official, mirroring the practice currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
