Revitalized Medvedev Secures First Championship in Nearly 30 Months
Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one titles have been earned on hard courts
A resurgent Daniil Medvedev secured his initial championship for 882 days with a win over Corentin Moutet in the tournament championship match.
The Russian, a ex- number one, has experienced a challenging season, achieving just one win at the big events and undergoing a meltdown at the US Open.
Medvedev's inconsistency on the tennis tour - and struggles with his serve in particular - led to him falling of the elite rankings and ultimately separating with former mentor his previous coach.
Presently working with Johansson and Goetzke, he has gradually improved in the recent weeks - peaking in a closely contested 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory over challenger Moutet.
This marks Medvedev's first trophy after the 2023 Rome Masters and initial on a hard surface since March of the previous year.
The win also means Medvedev has achieved twenty-one championships at twenty-one distinct tournaments.
"For the first time I have attended a event with my both daughters simultaneously, so to win a trophy is particularly special," stated tennis professional Medvedev.
"This victory is in tribute of my younger daughter my daughter, because the maiden victory I achieved when my first daughter her name was born was for her."
The athlete, the 2021 US Open champion, had been defeated in his previous six title deciders, including in that event earlier this year.
Medvedev's defensive play style and regular emotional displays on the playing surface had prompted commentators to wonder if his ability to perform at the top level was over.
But the player has altered his approach in the last few weeks, striving to approach the net and play assertively, supported by an better service.
Medvedev came back from a disadvantage in the first set against the difficult opponent, winning four of the final five games to gain the advantage.
The competitors swapped service breaks in the second set before the Frenchman, bidding for his maiden tour victory, took control to push for a final set.
Moutet saved 4 early chances in a tight final set before the champion secured a break to fifteen to serve for the match.
Fittingly, he clinched the title with a shot at the front of the court, with his opponent incapable to manage a shot after over two and a half hours.
